Refrigeration Technology in the Food Industry
Freshness, Hygiene, and Efficiency
We develop customized refrigeration solutions for the food industry: After all, the quality of your products depends directly on the reliability of your refrigeration systems. Whether it’s meat processing, dairy, baked goods, or fruits and vegetables: cold.world ENGINEERING designs refrigeration systems that meet the highest hygiene standards, guarantee reliability, and drastically reduce your energy costs through intelligent heat utilization.
Customized Process Cooling for the Food Industry’s Refrigeration Technology
Food processing facilities have specific requirements that standard air conditioning systems cannot meet. That’s why we understand the critical aspects of your production process.
- Hygienic Design & HACCP: For example, our designs take strict hygiene requirements into account. This means: components that are easy to clean, corrosion-resistant materials (stainless steel), and the elimination of hard-to-clean areas in cold storage rooms.
- Maximum reliability: A failure in the refrigeration system often results in the loss of entire batches. We design redundant systems to ensure that your production continues smoothly even during maintenance or in the event of malfunctions.
- Precise Temperature Control: Whether in a ripening room, blast freezer, or order-picking warehouse—we ensure precise temperatures and the correct humidity to prevent drying out or loss of quality.
The Game-Changer: Generating Process Heat from Cold
Hardly any other industry benefits as much from smart energy technology as the food industry’s refrigeration sector. Why? Because it must simultaneously cool (products) and heat (cleaning water, pasteurization).
- Free Hot Water: Through heat recovery or the use of high-temperature heat pumps, we utilize the waste heat from your refrigeration system to heat water to temperatures ranging from 60°C to 90°C.
- Ideal for cleaning: Use the waste heat directly for the daily cleaning of your facilities and rooms. This results in massive savings on gas or oil.
Industry-Specific Solutions
We develop concepts for various sectors of the food industry:
1. Meat Products & Slaughterhouses: The high cooling demand for blast freezers and cold storage rooms is offset by an enormous demand for hot water for cleaning. In these cases, we often rely on ammonia (NH3) systems with maximum heat recovery.
2. Dairy and Cheese Processing Plants: Ice water production for process cooling and precise climate control in aging rooms. Use of natural refrigerants to strengthen your brand’s “green image.”
3. Bakeries & Pasta Makers: Refrigeration for proofing chambers and dough cooling. CO₂ compound systems or propane chillers are often suitable options here.
4. Fruit, Vegetables & Logistics: Storage under controlled atmosphere and temperature to extend shelf life.
Frequently Asked Questions (Food & Beverage)
Is ammonia (NH3) safe in food production? Yes. Ammonia is the standard refrigerant used in industrial food production. To prevent any contact between the refrigerant and food, we often design indirect systems (chillers using a glycol/water mixture). The refrigerant remains safely in the machine room; only harmless chilled water flows through the production area.
How do you prevent mold growth in cold storage rooms? By properly sizing the air coolers and controlling humidity. We also ensure proper airflow management to prevent condensation from accumulating on ceilings or walls.
