Ammonia (R717) is not a trend, but the proven standard for large-scale industrial refrigeration – and today it is more relevant than ever. As a natural refrigerant, NH3 combines unsurpassed thermodynamic properties with absolute future-proofing. At cold.world ENGINEERING, we plan and optimize ammonia systems that are not only powerful, but also significantly reduce your operating costs through maximum energy efficiency.

Efficient NH3 refrigeration systems: Sustainable refrigeration technology with ammonia (R717)
There is hardly any way around ammonia in industrial refrigeration technology. It is the refrigerant of choice for logistics warehouses, the food industry and process cooling.
- Maximum energy efficiency: Ammonia has excellent heat transfer properties. R717 systems often achieve significantly higher coefficients of performance (COP) than comparable systems with synthetic refrigerants.
- 100% future-proof (F-gas-free): With a GWP (Global Warming Potential) of 0 and an ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) of 0, ammonia is not subject to any restrictions under the F-Gas Regulation.
- Low operating costs: In addition to the low power consumption, the refrigerant itself is also very inexpensive and available over the long term.
- Compact performance: The high volumetric cooling capacity means that pipe cross-sections and components can often be smaller.
Our services: Secure. Efficient. Sophisticated.
Handling NH3 requires special know-how, particularly with regard to safety regulations and material requirements. We support you from the initial idea through to commissioning.
1. planning & design (new build) We design customized NH3 refrigeration centers, compound systems or liquid chillers. We pay meticulous attention to compliance with all legal regulations (e.g. BImSchG, TRAS 110).
2. refurbishment & optimization (existing systems) Is your existing system consuming too much energy or no longer state of the art? We analyze your existing system and develop concepts for energy optimization or expansion.
3. safety concepts & approvals Ammonia is efficient, but toxic. We create the necessary safety concepts and risk assessments for you and provide support with approval procedures so that your plant is not only efficient, but also safe for people and the environment.
Areas of application for our NH3 solutions
- Logistics & cold stores: deep-freeze and fresh food storage.
- Food industry: breweries, dairies, meat processing.
- Process cooling: chemical and pharmaceutical industry.
- Heat pumps: Use of NH3 for large industrial heat pumps for waste heat recovery.
Frequently asked questions about ammonia systems
Is ammonia dangerous? Ammonia is toxic and flammable. However, thanks to modern safety technology, gas warning systems and professional planning in accordance with current regulations (EN 378), operation is highly safe. In addition, ammonia has a “self-warning” function due to its pungent odor even at the lowest concentrations.
Is it worth converting to ammonia? For systems with an output of approx. 100-150 kW or more, ammonia is often the most economical solution. The investment costs are usually quickly amortized by the enormous savings in electricity costs.
