Subsidies for Refrigeration Technology: The Government Helps Cover the Costs

Is energy efficiency expensive? Not necessarily. Anyone who invests in sustainable refrigeration technology and heat pumps today can benefit from attractive government grants. In particular, the use of natural refrigerants is heavily subsidized through programs such as the Federal Funding Program for Energy and Resource Efficiency in Industry (EEW). cold.world ENGINEERING designs your system so that it is not only technically flawless but also optimally meets the eligibility criteria for these grants.

Why Natural Refrigerants Make a Difference

The subsidy landscape in Germany (BAFA / KfW) has a clear goal: to move away from F-gases and toward natural solutions. For you, this means that systems using ammonia (NH3), CO2 (R744), or propane (R290) often receive significantly higher subsidy rates than conventional systems.

  • Up to a 50% grant: Depending on the size of the business and the program, the government may reimburse up to 50% of the eligible investment costs.
  • Faster Payback: Thanks to the grant, your ROI (return on investment) is often reduced to just a few years.

What is funded?

We help you navigate the maze of funding options. Typical eligible activities in our projects include:

1. New Construction & Replacement Investments (BAFA Module 4) The construction of new, highly efficient refrigeration systems or the replacement of old systems with systems using natural refrigerants. This usually requires a specific potential for CO2 or energy savings, which we demonstrate through calculations.

2. Industrial heat pumps. The use of waste heat or ambient heat to provide process heat is heavily subsidized, as it directly replaces natural gas.

3. Components & Optimization (Retrofit) Individual measures implemented on existing systems are also eligible for funding, e.g.:

  • Retrofitting of variable-frequency drives (VFDs).
  • Installation of heat recovery systems.
  • Optimization of measurement, control, and regulation technology (MSR).
  • Insulation of pipes and fittings (cold and heat insulation).

The most important rule: Submit the application before placing the order!

A mistake that costs you money: You must apply for (and often be approved for) subsidies before placing an order. As soon as you sign a supply contract or order a component, your eligibility for the subsidy is generally forfeited.

Our service for your application: We won’t leave you to handle the paperwork on your own.

Feasibility Analysis: In the initial draft, we assess whether your project is eligible for funding.

Calculation: We develop the necessary energy-saving plans (energy-saving plan according to Module 4) required for the application to the BAFA.

Partner Network: For the formal application process, we work with specialized energy consultants who handle communication with the authorities.
