Efficient NH3 Refrigeration Systems
Ammonia (R717) is not just a trend, but the proven standard for large-scale industrial refrigeration—and it’s more relevant today than ever. As a natural refrigerant, NH3 combines unmatched thermodynamic properties with absolute long-term reliability. At cold.world ENGINEERING, we design and optimize ammonia systems that are not only high-performance but also significantly reduce your operating costs through maximum energy efficiency.
Sustainable Refrigeration Technology Using Ammonia (R717)
In industrial refrigeration, there is virtually no way around using ammonia. It is the refrigerant of choice for logistics warehouses, the food industry, and process cooling.
- Maximum energy efficiency: Ammonia has excellent heat transfer properties. R717 systems often achieve significantly higher coefficient of performance (COP) values than comparable systems using synthetic refrigerants.
- 100% Future-Proof (F-Gas-Free): With a GWP (Global Warming Potential) of 0 and an ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) of 0, ammonia is not subject to any restrictions under the F-Gas Regulation.
- Low operating costs: In addition to low electricity consumption, the refrigerant itself is very inexpensive and will be available for the long term.
- Compact Performance: Thanks to the high volumetric cooling capacity, piping cross-sections and components can often be designed to be smaller.
Our Services: Reliable. Efficient. Well-thought-out.
Handling NH3 requires specialized expertise, particularly with regard to safety regulations and material requirements. We support you from the initial concept through to commissioning.
1. Planning & Design (New Construction) We design custom NH3 refrigeration plants, combined systems, or liquid coolers. In doing so, we pay meticulous attention to compliance with all legal requirements (e.g., BImSchG, TRAS 110).
2. Retrofit & Optimization (Existing Systems) Is your existing system consuming too much energy or no longer state-of-the-art? We analyze your existing system and develop plans for energy optimization or expansion.
3. Safety Plans & Permits Ammonia is efficient, but toxic. We develop the necessary safety plans and risk assessments for you and assist with the permitting process to ensure that your facility is not only efficient but also safe for people and the environment.
Applications for Our NH3 Solutions
- Logistics & Cold Storage Facilities: Frozen Food Warehouses and Fresh Food Warehouses.
- Food industry: breweries, dairies, meat processing.
- Process Cooling: Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industries.
- Heat Pumps: Use of NH3 in large-scale industrial heat pumps for waste heat recovery.
Frequently Asked Questions About Ammonia Systems
Is ammonia dangerous? Ammonia is toxic and flammable. However, thanks to modern safety technology, gas detection systems, and professional planning in accordance with current regulations (EN 378), its operation is highly safe. In addition, ammonia acts as a “natural warning system” due to its pungent odor, even at the lowest concentrations.
Is it worth converting to ammonia? For systems with a capacity of approximately 100–150 kW or more, ammonia is often the most economical solution. The investment costs are usually recouped quickly thanks to the enormous savings on electricity costs.
